BCCI Awaits Government Nod for India’s Bangladesh Tour as September Series Draws Closer

India’s proposed tour of Bangladesh is once again becoming a subject of discussion beyond cricket.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is working towards a white-ball series in Bangladesh in September, but the tour is still dependent on clearance from the Indian government. The two boards are understood to be working on the itinerary, with the final decision expected to involve the government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The proposed tour is not a small assignment. India are scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is against Bangladesh, with the series expected to take place in the first half of September. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has already announced the tour as part of its 2026 international calendar.

But the cricket itself is only part of the story.

India’s last planned white-ball tour of Bangladesh was postponed in 2025, with the BCCI and BCB agreeing to move the three ODIs and three T20Is to September 2026. The decision came amid scheduling issues and wider uncertainty surrounding the tour.

That history is why the proposed September series is being watched carefully.

According to reports, the BCCI and BCB have been working on a possible window, but the final go-ahead from the Indian government remains important. The BCCI is also understood to be considering changes to its schedule to create space for the Bangladesh tour.

For the players, a six-match white-ball series would be another important part of India’s preparations for the next phase of international cricket. For the boards, however, the series carries a different weight.

India and Bangladesh share a long cricketing relationship, but bilateral sport does not exist in isolation from the political relationship between the two countries. Recent developments in Bangladesh have made that relationship more complicated, meaning a decision on an Indian cricket tour inevitably has a wider context.

That is also why the government’s position matters.

The BCCI can work on fixtures, venues and logistics, and the BCB can prepare to host the Indian team. But until the necessary clearance comes through, the schedule remains subject to change.

The BCB has continued to express confidence that the series can take place. The board has included India in its home calendar and has been preparing for a busy international season.

For Indian cricket fans, the prospect is straightforward: six matches against Bangladesh, potentially beginning in September.

For the cricket boards, it is a matter of getting the details right.

For the governments, it is more complicated.

The next step will therefore not be decided only on a cricket field. It will depend on whether New Delhi gives the tour the clearance needed for the BCCI and BCB to turn a proposed series into a confirmed one.
