India’s consumer protection authority has initiated action against nine companies, including quick-commerce platform Zepto and airline IndiGo, for allegedly publishing misleading advertisements that could influence consumer decisions.

Move forms part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen consumer rights and improve transparency across digital and service-based industries.
According to officials, the notices were issued after the companies were found to have allegedly made promotional claims that did not fully comply with advertising standards under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.The

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has sought explanations from the companies and directed them to justify the claims made in their advertisements.
The regulator stated that businesses must ensure advertisements are truthful, verifiable and do not mislead consumers regarding prices, services, discounts or product features.Authorities

Authorities have increasingly intensified scrutiny of digital platforms as online shopping, food delivery and travel bookings continue to grow rapidly across the country.

Consumer rights experts welcomed the action, saying stricter enforcement encourages responsible advertising and helps build public trust in digital services. They noted that misleading promotional campaigns can significantly affect purchasing decisions, making regulatory oversight essential in a rapidly expanding digital economy.

Companies are expected to respond to the notices within the prescribed timeframe. Depending on the outcome of the proceedings, the regulator may direct modifications to advertisements, impose penalties or take further action under consumer protection laws.

The latest enforcement drive underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring fair business practices while protecting consumers from deceptive marketing claims.
