Mirabai Chanu Returns to the Spotlight as India Looks for an Early Commonwealth Games Boost

Every major sporting event has an athlete who carries more than just personal ambition. For India at the Commonwealth Games, that athlete is Mirabai Chanu.

The Olympic silver medallist is set to begin her campaign in weightlifting, a sport that has repeatedly delivered medals for India on the Commonwealth stage.

After spending much of the past two years battling injuries and working her way back to peak fitness, Chanu now has another opportunity to remind the world why she remains one of the country’s finest athletes.

Her return comes with familiar expectations. Whenever Chanu competes, a podium finish is rarely seen as a bonus it is often viewed as the benchmark.

That reputation has been built over years of success, including gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, a world championship title and India’s historic silver at the Tokyo Olympics.
This time, however, the challenge extends beyond winning another medal.

A strong performance would signal that Chanu’s comeback is firmly on track and strengthen her preparations for upcoming international competitions, including qualification events leading to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

India has traditionally relied on weightlifting to provide an early lift in its Commonwealth Games campaign, and Chanu’s event is expected to draw significant attention. She is likely to face stiff competition from lifters representing Australia, England and Nigeria, but her experience in handling high-pressure contests makes her one of the favourites.

As the competition gets underway, India’s medal hopes once again rest on the shoulders of an athlete who has repeatedly turned expectations into achievements.

Whether she adds another gold to her collection or not, Mirabai Chanu’s performance will be one of the defining stories of India’s campaign.
