Rahul Gandhi Backs Student Protest, Says ‘India’s Future Lies With Its Youth’

The battle over India’s student protests has spilled beyond the streets and into the country’s political arena.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday threw his weight behind the protesting students, describing them as “India’s future” while launching a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking after meeting student representatives, Gandhi said the government’s response could not silence young people demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in the education system.

Calling the students’ demand for the removal of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan “non-negotiable”, Gandhi argued that shifting him to another ministry would not address the concerns raised by protesters.

He also claimed the government was attempting to intimidate students but insisted they should continue their democratic agitation.

“The students are the future of India, while Narendra Modi is the past. The past can never fight the future,” Gandhi said, framing the ongoing confrontation as a broader debate over the country’s direction rather than just a dispute over education policy.

His remarks come as opposition parties seek to align themselves with the nationwide student movement, which has grown into a larger political issue after weeks of protests over examination-related concerns.

The demonstrations have already triggered significant political fallout, including the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan as Union Education Minister.

With both the ruling BJP and the Opposition courting young voters, the unfolding debate is increasingly becoming a contest over who can better address the aspirations and frustrations of India’s youth ahead of future electoral battles.
