Ishan Kishan’s 270 Puts Him Back in the Test Conversation as East Zone Reach 708

2

Ishan Kishan has given the selectors something difficult to ignore.

The East Zone captain produced a massive 270 off 334 balls against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. His innings lasted 522 minutes and included 30 fours and seven sixes, as East Zone eventually reached 708 before being bowled out.

Kishan had already made his mark on the opening day with an unbeaten 111. He then returned on Monday and turned a strong position into complete control.

What stood out was not only the size of the score but the way he built it. He took time when the situation demanded it and then attacked when the bowlers began to tire.

The left-hander reached his double century from 270 balls. After getting there, he accelerated sharply and moved from 200 to 250 in only 31 balls. He eventually fell for 270 when he hit Tripurana Vijay towards the sight-screen and was caught by Ravichandran Smaran.

Kishan’s innings also came in front of three national selectors, which gives the knock another layer. He has spent the past few seasons trying to rebuild his position in Indian cricket and a performance of this scale in a first-class final will naturally bring the question of a Test return back into discussion.

It does not guarantee selection, but it gives him a strong piece of evidence to put in front of the selectors.

He was not alone in doing the damage. Kumar Kushagra scored 101 from 132 balls and shared a 230-run partnership with Kishan for the fifth wicket. The partnership took the game further away from South Zone and left their bowlers with very little room to recover.

South Zone eventually had one positive moment late in the day when Tripurana Vijay removed Kishan and finished with four wickets. But by then East Zone had already crossed 700. The final wicket fell at 708 after 163 overs, leaving South Zone with the much harder job when they begin their first innings.

The 270 also puts Kishan among a small group of batters to score a double century in a Duleep Trophy final. It is the second-highest individual score in a Duleep Trophy final, behind Raman Lamba’s 320 from 1987. It is also the highest score by an East Zone batter in a Duleep Trophy final.

For Kishan, though, the numbers may matter less than what comes next.

A big domestic innings does not automatically translate into an India return. The selectors will have to look at his overall red-ball form and the competition for places. But 270 in a major domestic final is exactly the kind of performance that can change the conversation.

East Zone now have the advantage in the final. South Zone have not yet batted and still have a chance to change the direction of the match. But after two days, the biggest story belongs to Kishan.

He arrived at the final with something to prove. He leaves the second day with 270 runs and a much louder argument for why he should remain in India’s red-ball plans.
