ISRO Launches EOS-05: India Gets a New Eye in the Sky From Geosynchronous Orbit

The sky over Sriharikota lit up in the early hours of Friday as ISRO’s GSLV-F17 rocket rose from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre carrying EOS-05, an Earth observation satellite designed to give India a new view of the planet from a much higher orbit.

The rocket lifted off at exactly 2:55 am from the Second Launch Pad after a countdown that ran for more than 27 hours. About 18 minutes later, ISRO confirmed that the 2,367-kg EOS-05 had been successfully placed into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.

The launch marks an important first for India. EOS-05 is the country’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from geosynchronous orbit, giving it the ability to watch a much wider area of Earth from a position roughly 36,000 km above the planet once it reaches its final orbit.

That is what makes the satellite different from many of India’s earlier Earth observation spacecraft.

Satellites flying in lower orbits pass over particular areas and return later. EOS-05 is designed to provide a much more persistent view of a large region. For India, that could be particularly useful when conditions on the ground are changing quickly.

ISRO says the satellite will strengthen Earth observation services, with applications including agriculture and disaster management. Near-real-time imagery could help in watching floods, cyclones and other events while also providing information for monitoring land and crops.

The rocket itself also had an important job.

GSLV-F17 is the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. With EOS-05 weighing 2,367 kg, the mission carried the heaviest Earth observation payload yet launched by a GSLV.

For ISRO, Friday’s success also brings some relief after a difficult start to the year. The PSLV-C62 mission carrying EOS-N1 in January ended unsuccessfully after an anomaly during the flight. EOS-05 is therefore the agency’s first successful orbital launch of 2026.

There is still work to be done before EOS-05 reaches its final operating position.

The satellite was first placed into a transfer orbit. It will then use its own onboard propulsion system to carry out a series of manoeuvres and move towards its intended geosynchronous orbit.

Once it is fully operational, scientists and government agencies will be able to use the satellite’s observations for a range of applications.

The real value may become clearest during the next major flood, cyclone or other rapidly developing event. Instead of waiting for a satellite to pass over an area again, the new system is designed to keep a much closer watch on a broad region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated ISRO, calling the launch a proud moment and highlighting the growing partnership between India’s space agency and the domestic space industry.

For the scientists and engineers at Sriharikota, the important moment came just after the rocket disappeared into the morning sky. The satellite had separated, the mission had reached its planned orbit and another piece of India’s Earth observation capability was on its way.

EOS-05 now has a longer journey ahead. But the first step is complete and India has put another eye in the sky.
