For some young Indians, the idea of travel is changing in a small but interesting way.
They are not only booking rooms and planning weekend trips anymore. Some are opening their own homes to travellers and turning unused spaces into short-stay accommodation.
Airbnb says the number of Gen Z hosts in India grew by nearly 40% year on year during the first half of 2026. Nearly two out of every five new Airbnb hosts in India during that period were between 18 and 29 years old, according to the company’s data.
The change is not limited to India’s biggest cities.
The company says young-host activity is also growing in smaller urban centres and rural destinations. Indore recorded more than 120% year-on-year growth in its Gen Z host community during the first half of the year, while places including Dehradun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lucknow and Mathura are also seeing young people enter the hosting space.
For some hosts, the idea starts with space that is already available.
A spare floor, an unused room or a part of a family home can become a place for visitors to stay. Instead of treating the property simply as unused space, young owners are finding a way to connect it with travel.
There is also a financial reason behind the trend.
Airbnb says earnings among Gen Z hosts in India increased by more than 60% year on year in the first half of 2026. The company also says almost one in seven Gen Z hosts in India has achieved its Superhost status.
Those figures come from Airbnb’s own platform data, so they should be understood as a picture of activity on that platform rather than a measure of India’s entire homestay industry.
The wider travel trend is changing too.
Airbnb’s India search data shows domestic searches for monsoon travel were almost 40% higher year on year for the July-to-September travel period. Searches for shorter breaks of three to five days and weekend trips have also increased.
That fits with a broader shift toward shorter, more frequent trips.
Instead of waiting for one long annual holiday, travellers are increasingly looking for a few days away that can fit around work and other responsibilities.
For young hosts, that creates an opportunity.
A traveller looking for a weekend in a smaller city may prefer staying in a residential neighbourhood rather than a conventional hotel. A host, meanwhile, can offer something that a standard room cannot easily provide local knowledge, a family home and a sense of the neighbourhood beyond the usual tourist route.
But hosting is also a responsibility.
Opening a home to strangers involves issues such as guest safety, local regulations, privacy, cleanliness and security. The income potential alone does not remove those responsibilities.
For now, the numbers suggest that more young Indians are willing to take that step.
The interesting part is that they are becoming participants in travel in two different ways: as people who want to explore new places and as people willing to open their own spaces to others.
That may be the more significant change happening beneath the latest travel numbers.
Travel is no longer just about where Indians go.
For a growing number of young people, it is also becoming about what they can offer when someone else arrives.
