She Saw People in Their 70s and 80s Travelling Alone. Her Question About India Started a Bigger Conversation

New Delhi: It was not a medical study or a survey that started this conversation. It was something an Indian traveller noticed while moving through Europe.

In a post shared on X on August 29, the woman, who uses the handle @Kavitastocks, said she repeatedly saw people who appeared to be in their 70s and 80s travelling independently, carrying their own luggage and walking considerable distances. The sight made her think about how differently ageing can look from one place to another.

Her question was blunt: could diet, physical activity and everyday habits be playing a role in how people remain mobile as they grow older?

The post quickly became a discussion rather than a simple travel observation.

Some people agreed with her point that Indians need to take physical activity and long-term fitness more seriously. Others pushed back against comparing two populations based on what one traveller happened to see during a trip.

That second point matters.

There is no single way in which people age, and a person’s mobility cannot be judged simply by their nationality. The World Health Organization notes that people of the same age can have very different physical and mental capacities. It also says healthy ageing is influenced not only by individual behaviour but by the environments in which people live.

Still, the question about staying active is a legitimate one.

WHO recommends that adults aged 18 to 64 get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, or the equivalent amount of more vigorous activity. For people aged 65 and above, the recommendations continue to emphasise regular activity, with additional attention to strength and balance for those with mobility difficulties.

Walking counts.

So do cycling, swimming, household activities and other forms of movement. The important point is not necessarily joining a gym. It is maintaining movement as part of everyday life.

That may be one reason the woman’s observation resonated with so many people.

In India, daily life can often involve a very different relationship with movement. Short journeys may be made on two-wheelers or by car. Pedestrian infrastructure varies widely between cities. In many families, older people also depend on relatives for transport and other everyday tasks.

None of these factors can explain an individual’s health on their own.

But they do show why ageing is more complicated than simply asking whether someone eats well or exercises.

WHO also points to the importance of safe and accessible transport, walkable surroundings and supportive social environments in helping older people maintain their independence.

That is perhaps the more useful takeaway from the viral observation.

The goal of fitness later in life is not necessarily about looking young or being able to run long distances. It can be something much more ordinary: being able to walk to a shop, carry a small bag, climb stairs, travel with family or manage daily activities without needing help.

The woman herself made a similar point in her post, saying the real goal of fitness is to remain independent enough to enjoy the additional years of life.

Her comparison between European and Indian seniors may be too broad to establish a national difference.

But it has raised a question worth asking at an individual level: what are we doing today that will determine how independently we live 20 or 30 years from now?

That question does not require a comparison between countries.

It begins with everyday life.
