Apple has entered a new era. John Ternus has taken over as chief executive, replacing Tim Cook after 15 years at the helm of one of the world’s most influential technology companies. Cook is moving into the role of executive chairman, keeping him involved with Apple while Ternus takes responsibility for the company’s day-to-day direction.
The transition was announced by Apple in April as part of a succession plan approved by its board.
Ternus arrives with a very different professional background from Cook. Cook became known for operations, supply chains and the enormous manufacturing network behind Apple’s products. Ternus has spent much of his career closer to the products themselves. He joined Apple in 2001 and eventually became senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, overseeing work across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro.
That makes his appointment especially interesting at a time when Apple is facing a technology shift that could be as important as the smartphone revolution. Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how people use computers and phones, and Apple’s competitors are investing heavily in AI assistants, generative tools and devices built around these capabilities. Apple has its own AI strategy, but the company has faced growing expectations to show consumers what that strategy can actually deliver.
For Ternus, the challenge will be turning Apple’s engineering strength into products that feel genuinely useful rather than simply adding AI features because everyone else is doing it. Apple’s advantage has traditionally been the tight integration between hardware and software. Its own chips, operating systems, cameras and devices can be designed to work together, potentially giving the company a strong foundation for more personal AI experiences.
But the technology still has to solve real problems for users if it is going to become a major part of Apple’s next chapter.
The new CEO is also taking over at a busy moment. Apple is entering another major product cycle, meaning Ternus will quickly be judged by what customers see in the company’s next generation of devices. His engineering background could influence how Apple approaches future products, but expectations will be high. Consumers have become accustomed to Apple turning complex technology into products that are simple to understand and easy to use.
Cook’s move to executive chairman provides an important layer of continuity. Apple says he will continue supporting the company in areas including engagement with governments and policymakers. That experience could remain valuable as Apple deals with regulations, trade issues and its complicated global supply chain.
At the same time, Ternus gets the opportunity to establish his own leadership style rather than simply becoming another version of Cook.
There is also a bigger challenge waiting beyond the next iPhone or Mac. The technology industry is looking for the next major computing platform, with artificial intelligence, smart glasses, robotics and other emerging technologies competing for attention. Apple has the financial resources and engineering talent to pursue several of these areas, but choosing where to make a major bet could define Ternus’s tenure.
His appointment therefore represents more than a change of CEO. Cook leaves behind an Apple that became dramatically larger and more valuable, expanding far beyond the iPhone into services, wearables and other products. Ternus now inherits that enormous foundation, but he also inherits the pressure to keep Apple relevant as technology moves into a new phase.
The question for the new CEO is ultimately simple: what comes after the iPhone era?
Ternus has spent decades helping Apple build the devices people use today. Now he has to help decide what those devices and perhaps the technology beyond them — will look like tomorrow.
